INSTRUMENTATION: The Perkin Elmer Pyris 1 DSC determines the specific heat, heat of fusion, heat of reaction or heat of polymerization of materials and is accomplished by heating or cooling a sample and reference under such conditions that they are always maintained at the same temperature. The additional heat required by the sample to maintain them at the same temperature is a function of the observed chemical or physical change. After the analysis is complete, an endotherm (corresponding to heat absorption) and an exotherm (corresponding to energy release) are generated. This is in accordance with both NATAS (North American Thermal Analysis Society) and ICTA (International Conference on Thermal Analysis) conventions. Applications include: plastics, pharmaceuticals, etc. Determines: melting point and heat of melting, controlled cooling, glass transition temperatures, etc. IMPORTANCE: Manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and their raw materials can precisely test the purity (crystalinity) of samples using this method. RESULTS: A method report and detailed graphs illustrating sample reaction to heating/cooling are included. |
